Can Essentiality of Origin Save Meritocracy From The Luck Objection?

Abstract Rawls famously argued against meritocratic conceptions of distributive justice on the grounds that accumulation merit is an unavoidably lucky process, both because differences in early environment, and innate talents. Thomas Mulligan (2018a) has recently provided a novel defense meritocracy “luck objection”, arguing sources luck would be mostly eliminated meritocracy. While system fair equality opportunity ensures social class or environment do not lead to merit, Kripke’s essentiality origin thesis means our genetic endowments, thus talents, could have been any other way. But if we fail argues, then it matter them, so merits accumulate their basis are luck-dependent. This paper argues Mulligan’s appeal fails rescue from objection for two reasons. First, even granting opportunity, contingencies market mean having some talents far luckier than others. And second, misses underlying motivation objection, ignores intimate connection between desert responsibility.
